Those border patrol agents

Are you familiar with the story? Care to comment? Almost everybody is taking the side of the agents, saying that they were doing their job. The story as most are telling it: A Mexican illegal alien and drug smuggler, attempted to secret nearly 800 pounds of marijuana into the United States in his van. Agent Compean chased Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila by vehicle and on foot, ordering him to stop. Compean says Aldrete-Davila ignored him, pushed him down, and assaulted him, whereupon the agent called for backup. When Ramos arrived on the scene, he heard gunfire, saw Compean on the ground, and the fugitive – still refusing to stop as commanded – holding something shiny he believed to be a handgun. Both state they felt threatened, and both fired rounds in the alien’s direction, Ramos striking him in the buttocks. The alien got away, but the two men had jeopardized their own well-being to keep his noxious contraband off our streets. Now these agents are serving 11 and 12 year sentences for doing their job.

I don't know everything about this story, but I think there is more to it than meets the eye. Do you have any comments?

Okay, first of all, when they tried to apprehend the suspect, and when they shot at him as he was running back to Mexico, the agents did not know at that time that there was marijuana in the van. They didn't even know for sure whether he was legal or illegal. So, they were not trying to stop a drug smuggler. They were trying to stop someone who was trying to run away from them. And, they shot at him more than 15 times. They are not supposed to shoot a suspect who is fleeing, unarmed and poses no threat.

I just don't want to jump on the bandwagon with everybody else and say these agents are heroes. Maybe they don't deserve that long of a sentence, but are they completely innocent? Did they do everything by the book? Apparently not, because they tried to cover it up later.

Come on, let's get some discussion going here.

The guy was from Mexico. He shouldn't of been here. And even if they did not know there was dope in the van, they probly had an idea there was.

So, the guy was from Mexico... Are we not supposed to be from there in order to not be shot at? So, just having an idea that there's dope in a vehicle means whatever they did was okay?

I'm glad the drug runner is bringing the crop to sell in spite of government war on drugs.

I'm glad he got off and I'm glad he got some justice for being shot in the back while bring the crop to market.
