More intrusive legislation brewing in California

It passed the Assembly 44 to 11. Now, it's on to the Senate.

The proposed law:
You cannot drive with a dog on your lap.

What are your thoughts on this proposed legislation?

Linnette my friend Joanne was already pulled over for that I think 2 months ago. They said it was illegal.

Next, the dog will have to be in a doggy car seat--in the back seat.

Neisha that is a funny image.

Maybe Mitt Romney has some ideas on this legislation.

Tavia, that is hillaryous.

I had a flashback of Chevy Chase in "Vacation".

Neisha, I saw this comment from someone today: "Passage of AB 2233 might encourage manufacturers to create more comfortable devices to secure animals in vehicles". People are bright huh?

Can't choose not to wear seatbelts.
Can't smoke in your own car or house.
Can't hold or nurse your child in your car.
Can't hold your dog in your lap.
Can't hold your cell when driving.

I guess they need a law for every possible distraction.

Maybe they should ban bilboard advertisements along the roadsides.

How about banning CD's and tapes in cars because changing them might be distracting.

And they should only have one radio station because if you have a choice, you might get in an accident while tuning.

They should probably do away with maps because if someone is lost they might look at one while driving.

How about allowing just one government radio station to get our daily dose of indoctrination.

Whats next? No talking to fellow passengers?

The government should keep it's nose out of our lives and out of our laps. Where does personal responsibility come in? There are no current statistics about accidents caused by holding pets. Maybe MAPH (Mothers Against Pet Holding) has compiled some stats.

The lopsidedness of the vote, 44 to 11, speaks volumes. Our elected representatives here in California have shown repeatedly that they have no qualms about legislating down to every last detail of our lives.

Assemblyman Bill Maze says his legislation has nothing to do with pet-loving celebrities who are photographed driving around Los Angeles with their small dogs.

Maze says he introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap.

Then he said, "Hey that should be against the law"? Wonder why he didn't put in a bill that said you can't drive with three dogs in your lap?

I think Carol should run for State Assembly! Wouldn't she be fantastic!

Yeah John and people just roll over and say "ok". Next they'll be telling us we can't read the newspaper while driving.

Wonder if I can drive with my pet monkey?

Carol, that is amazing: "Maze says he introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap."

The mindset of these politicians! He sees one citizen doing something he perceives as reckless, so propose new restrictions on EVERY citizen!

Yes John, and he probably never saw such thing. But you are right, he sees one person doing it and thinks, "I'll get some name recognition here".

Maze also pointed to a recent American Automobile Association study that found pets and loose objects were common distractions and significant traffic hazards.

I think Maze thought these "pets and loose objects" were inside the car instead of outside. lol

It's only fair that they ban loose objects too.

No, Carol. You can't drive with a monkey, either. The legislation doesn't actually specify "dog." It says you can't drive with a "pet" on your lap. I assume that would mean a monkey, cat, dog, snake, mouse, flea, mosquito. But, what if it's not a pet. Suppose you just found a stray dog or cat on the road? It's really not your pet, right? Hmmmmm....

"mouse, flea, mosquito" hahaha!

The owner of FidoRido Pet Car Seats is probably behind this.

Carol, I love your two comments, they make great points! I copied and pasted them to use for future reference!

This is the kind of legislation that needs to be challenged! If this legislation actually passes, I think I will start a petition to overturn it! Seriously! Not because I'm going to be effected by it, but because it's just wrong. It's government nitpicking is what it is!

Like Carol said,

Yeah, never mind about illegal wars, torture and vanishing liberties. The dog on my lap issue has gone done to meddling.

Lisa said...

Well, when you put it like that, I see your point. So, you think I ought to start with the "illegal wars, torture, and vanishing liberties" first, then tackle the dog in lap issue further down the line?

lol!!

The seat belt law is SERIOUS meddling too. I rememeber being at stop light at Jefferson and Winchester in Murrieta and a cop just standing there in the middle of that busy intersection, starring into cars as they drove by after the light changed, looking for seat belt violations.

I thought of the Founding Fathers and what they would think, and knew they were spinning in their graves.
