New Hampshire vs. Vermont

Alyssa and Leo and kids visited Vermont. It is beautiful. But, Alyssa says that New Hampshire is just as beautiful and she likes it much better. New Hampshire is the "Live Free or Die" state. No income tax and no sales tax. And, when entering the state, there is this sign regarding seat belts.

It is also the home of the Free State Project. I thought about moving there to join and would if it were not for my job.

The Free State Project is an agreement among 20,000 pro-liberty activists to move to New Hampshire, where they will exert the fullest practical effort toward the creation of a society in which the maximum role of government is the protection of life, liberty, and property. The success of the Project would likely entail reductions in taxation and regulation, reforms at all levels of government, to expand individual rights and free markets, and a restoration of constitutional federalism, demonstrating the benefits of liberty to the rest of the nation and the world.

Now, doesn't that sound nice? Tavia

New Hampshire offers some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation: no permit is required to open carry and a concealed carry permit is available on a shall issue basis.

I love that sign!

This is an example of STUPID laws: Since I have to wear a seatbelt, I always do, but sometimes when I try to unbuckle it to get out of car, it gets stuck, and it'll take me three or four minutes to get it unstuck. By that time, I'm so frustrated and mad, it just makes me realize that STUPID laws don't work!
And, as I'm trying to unjam the damn thing, I think, "What if I had an accident and I had to get out of car before it blew up?"

Yes, Lisa, has happened, and people have been burned alive. Or, they have been car jacked and bolt out the door with their seat belt still attached and get dragged to death.

One time I wrote in a forum how we don't have freedom in this country, I can't even make my own decision whether to wear my seat belt or not. And someone replied, "Seat belts save lives you moron!"

Re the picture, is it implying that if you are over 18 you are not required to wear a seat belt?

Yes, John. It is funny how we like that sign. That shows how we appreciate just a little bit of freedom. Because the sign should have said, "No seatbelts required in New Hampshire."

Questions to the room:

As a parent do you make your kids wear a seat belt?

Because you want them to be safe?

Because it's the law? Both?

If I was babysitting for you, would you want me to make your kids wear a seat belt?

What if I forgot, you know, not having any kids of my own.

What if your kid refused?

Or what if that sign wasn't there to remind me to belt them in?

Hey, can I take your kids for a ride when I'm in town in November?

I'll try to remember to belt them in, but maybe you should put up a sign, just in case.

Wait, who would pay to put up the sign that says "No seatbelts required in New Hampshire." Certainly not taxpayers, right?

Wouldn't a sign like that open up New Hampshire to liability suits after the first death where a seat belt could have saved a life?

If seat belts shouldn't be required, should manufacturers be required to put them in all cars, or is that also unnecessary regulation? What if the seat belt was sold as optional equipment? I'll skip the seatbelt, give me the 6 disc changer. It's a really slippery slope.

I get all of the ringing that I hear you doing of the "Liberty" bell.

I just wish you'd pick something that isn't a no-brainer to use as an example. Something I can get behind.
